The Albee Square Mall opened its doors in 1980, gradually becoming a prominent point of convergence for all residents of New York City nestled on the Fulton pedestrian walk located at the intersection of Dekalb Avenue and Fulton Street, Downtown Brooklyn. Construction on the project began three years earlier when it’s namesake, the RKO Albee Theater, was demolished to make way for the development. With an unassuming glass exterior and signature marquee display, Albee Square Mall became a cultural landmark that nurtured Brooklyn’s rising middle class, and rejuvenated a commercial district. Upon the mall’s opening, investors were concerned about the low turnout of new shoppers and the lack of support that many Brooklyn residents showed who were not excited about the demolition of the historical landmark theatre that was replaced with the new shopping gallery. High school students that attended many popular Brooklyn high schools such as Bishop Laughlin, Brooklyn Tech, George Westinghouse, and Sarah J Hale began frequenting the mall after school hours to seek employment, socialize and shop. Within three years of the mall's grand opening it slowly became a popular hang out location among teenagers known for a bustling food court, exclusive leather outlets, shoe stores, urban fashion boutiques, electronics, optical frames, custom jewelry and a state of the art game room.
